The QualityRights initiative – Dipartimento di Salute Mentale ASUGI – WHO CC, Trieste, Italy

Trieste Mental Health Department (MHD), WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Mental Health (WHO CC) is supporting the implementation of the QualityRights Initiative through the promotion and implementation of QualityRights tools for improving quality of Mental Health Services in European Countries and globally in the framework of deinstitutionalization policies and practices. This represents one of the two activities of the workplan 2022-2026 of Trieste WHO Collaborating Centre.

Most recent achievements

  • The QualityRights Core Training slides and guides had been translated into Italian and are published here
  • The QualityRights Person-centred recovery planning for mental health and well-being self-help tool had been translated into Italian and is published here
  • A group of professionals, peer support workers and users of Trieste and Gorizia MHD took part in face-to-face QualityRights Core training in September 2022
  • Professionals, users, family members and peer support workers of Trieste and Gorizia MHD have completed the QualityRights e-training
  • A session of the meeting “1st meeting on: promotion and awareness of the peer support expert in mental health services” held in Gorizia (Italy) in June 2023 has been dedicated to the QualityRights Initiative.
  • A session of the meeting “2nd meeting on: promotion and awareness of the peer support expert – in mental health services” held in Gorizia (Italy) in June 2024 has been dedicated to the QualityRights Initiative and specifically to the QualityRights Person-centred recovery planning for mental health and well-being self-help tool
  • The WHO CC is part of the regional and national network of Peer Support Experts that led to the establishment on 18 May 2024 of AIPESP Italian Association of Peer Support Experts, an organisation that advocates for the professional recognition of Peer Support Experts as a professional figure in the field of mental health and pathological addictions
  • The QualityRights Initiative is presented and explained to all visitors (delegations of professionals, students, policy makers etc..) that take part in study visit to Trieste and Gorizia MHD and is a core element of all the trainings within international cooperation projects in which the MHD is partner.

 Achievements 2015-2018

  • Trieste MHD, WHO CC staff participated to the training on “Improving Quality and Human Rights in Mental Health Facilities, in Amsterdam, Athena Institute, 6-8 July 2015
  • In 2016 two staff of Trieste MHD WHO CC attended the First international Summer School on QualityRights in Cagliari
  • Two staff of Trieste MHD WHO CC attended the seminar “Training Workshop on improving Quality and Human Rights in Mental Health Facilities” held in 2017 at WHO HQ, Geneva
  • 9 staff members of Trieste MHD WHO CC have completed the Quality Rights E- training
  • Since the academic year 2016-2017 the QualityRights Initiative is part of the curricula classes of the 20 hours course known as “Psychiatric Rehabilitation Techniques” led by Trieste University – Faculty of Medicine
  • In the year 2016-2018 Trieste MHD WHO CC participated in the EU Erasmus + initiative “Empowerment College”. A group of service users, peers and operators have developed the module “My Rights, my life” with workshops and trainings. During the meetings the QualityRights Initiative was presented to the participants.
