QualityRights – Gujarat, India
In India, the QualityRights project was launched in July 2014 by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of Gujarat. The project focuses on the assessment of quality & human rights conditions in mental health services throughout the state of Gujarat, and developing an individualized improvement plan for each of the services.
Additionally, a comprehensive capacity building programme has been implemented to train health care staff, service users and families on mental health and human rights, the recovery approach to mental health care, and other critical areas.
Also as part of QualityRights Gujarat, people with psychosocial disabilities have been trained and recruited as Peer Support Volunteers (PSVs) at each of the services in order to provide support to people using the services. PSVs ensure that people know their rights and help them to develop recovery plans, to identify their goals and wishes for treatment and recovery
Finally, peer support groups led by people with psychosocial disabilities known as Maitri – and peer support groups led by families – known as Saathi – have been also established as part of QualityRights Gujarat.
